Benchmarking Study: Digger Derrick

The graphs below are derived from the data of over 50 of our utility and municipal fleet benchmarking clients and their active Digger Derricks. The sample included nearly 12,000 vehicles weighing less than or equal to 55,000 GVWR. The data being used represents the patterns we have seen from the industry average of the selected sample.

This graph shows the operating cost (all parts and labor) net of fuel per mile for the Digger Derrick. As the graph indicates, as a Digger Derrick ages, the operating cost per 1,000 miles also increases. The overall operating cost for the Digger Derrick in Year 1 was $1,193 per 1,000 miles, while in Year 10 it was $4,156 per 1,000 miles, an increase of $2,963 or 148% over the 10 years. The average operating cost per 1,000 miles for the Digger Derrick over the same 10-year period was $2,791.

The annual average miles driven between 2017 and 2021 varied, with the most miles driven in 2017 (6,119 miles), and the least being driven in 2021 (5,704 miles). This graph shows the average miles per gallon (MPG) from 2017-2021 for the Digger Derrick. The annual average MPG for this time period varied, with the highest MPG in 2020 being 4.33 miles, and the lowest MPG in 2018 being 4.09. The average MPG for the 5-year period was 4.24 miles.

This graph shows the average number of days between unscheduled/demand repair events from 2017-2021 for the Digger Derrick. Throughout this period, the truck had an average of 23.8 days between unscheduled events.

This graph shows the average number of days between scheduled/preventive maintenance events from 2017-2021 for the Digger Derrick. The truck averaged 54.2 days between scheduled maintenance events for this period.

This graph shows the average age of the Digger Derrick from 2017-2021. The average age didn’t vary too much, with the highest age of 8.29 years in 2019 and the lowest age of 7.67 in 2021. The average age overall for the Digger Derrick was 8.09 years.
